Staveley-in-Cartmel sits equidistant between the historic market town of Ulverston and the lakeside town of Windermere (8 miles each way). Each offers a unique shopping experience with a good selection of independent shops and strong hospitality offers.

The nearest food shop is less than a mile away at the Shell Garage at Newby Bridge which has a Budgens, a Costa Express and a Greggs.

Smaller, destination shopping experiences can be found at Cartmel, which is home to beautiful homewares, antiques, and art galleries, and at Low Newton, the location of Yew Tree Barn, a real treasure trove, of gifts, antiques and reclamation items, and the site of regular artisan markets and events throughout the year.

For larger high street shops and brands visit Kendal, Lancaster, or Barrow.

Fuel

The Shell garage is situated on the A590, at Newby Bridge, less than a mile away from April Cottage. In addition to fuel, it also provides a car wash, ample parking, a cash machine and it houses a well-stocked grocery store including a Greggs concession.

Electric Vehicle Charging

We do not allow electric vehicles to be charged via any of the domestic electric points at April Cottage as this comes with huge fire and liability risks and our insurance will not cover any loss, damage or liability caused by the usage of electrical vehicle charging points or the charging of electrical vehicles.

If you have an electric vehicle, there are EV charging points at the Swan Hotel at Newby Bridge and at the Shell Garage at Newby Bridge, both less than a mile away.

Bus

The Number 6 Stagecoach bus service runs between Barrow and Windmere and goes through Newby Bridge and Fellfoot with stops at each place. Check bus timetables for bus services from Newby Bridge.

Train

The closest train station is Oxenholme, near Kendal on the West Coast Main Line (WCML), providing regular trains from both London Euston, Glasgow, Preston, and Manchester. There are regular bus services from Kendal to Ulverston and Barrow via Newby Bridge, a ten-minute walk from the railway.

Taxi

There are plenty of taxi services available from Ulverston and Windermere. The closest taxi service to April Cottage is in Haverthwaite.

Catholic Mass

Just up the hill from April Cottage is St Mary’s RC Church. The church community at St Mary's is friendly and inclusive and welcomes families, walkers, and visitors. Most of its services are Holy Communion. Members of the congregation are involved in reading the lessons, the psalm, and administering the chalice.
